Requirements for Students in the Jeffrey S. Raikes School
Laptops are an important part of the Raikes School. All Raikes students are required to bring one.
Recommended minimum specification for your laptop:
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHZ process or AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core processor for Notebook PCs (2.0) GHZ
- Graphic Card: ATI or NVidia graphic card with at least 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory
- Memory: 2 GB of memory or 4 GB if you are planning on using Windows Vista
- Storage: 160 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive
- Operating System: You will be able to purchase Windows Vista Professional for $10 from the UNL Computer Shop on campus once you received your NUID this summer, so there is no minimum operating system requirement
- Microsoft Office: You will also be able to purchase Microsoft Office 2007 Professional for $15 from the UNL Computer Shop on campus once you received your NUID this summer, so no need to buy it before hand.
- DVD Drive: DVD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD-RW is required
- Wireless Card: Any, but must have built in one to access the wireless network in the building
- Ethernet Port: Required to access the network via Ethernet cable (this is standard for almost any laptop)
Please be aware that the Raikes School does not have the resources to provide student with laptops if the student's laptop is sent for service. The University Student Union offers laptop checkouts but it is only for a day.
Most computer retailers offer next business day warranty for additional cost to avoid situation where students are facing 2 or 3 weeks without a laptop because of a hardware problem.
